Health Services

Welcome Parents & Students

School nursing is a specialized practice of nursing that protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success. School nurses, grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are the leaders who bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential. Adopted by the NASN Board of Directors February 2017.

School Nurse

Roselle Public Schools employs 8 school nurses who serve the 8 schools in the district. As health professionals, we are dedicated to providing your child with a safe and healthy school environment in which to learn and grow. Additionally, we will work with you to ensure that your child is on the road to optimum health and wellness.
This page was designed as a tool to keep parents and families of our school community informed of health related information and also keep you abreast of NJ State Department of Health requirements.
The page also contains links to Roselle Public Schools district forms and outside resources that may be of assistance to you. We hope you find this page helpful and as always, your feedback is most appreciated.

Tips From the Health Office

Tips From the Health Office
Children spread germs very quickly and easily without knowing it, even when they are reminded to wash their hands and cover their coughs and sneezes.
In an effort to prevent the spread of germs from one student to another and to safeguard the health of both the students and the staff, here are some guidelines that should help you in making an informed decision about whether or not to send your child to school.

Keep your child home if he or she has fever. Students may return to school when their temperature has been normal for at least 24 hours without having taken temperature-lowering medication.

Keep your child home if he or she has vomiting or diarrhea.  Students should be symptom free for 24 hours and be able to hold down food and fluids before returning to school.

Keep your child home if he or she has a bad cold or cough or Flu. Students should stay home if they are too uncomfortable to complete work. Students should also stay home if they have a persistent or severe cough, sneezing, headache, body aches or stuff/runny nose.
Students may return to school when their temperature and activity level have returned to normal.

Keep your child home if he or she has strep throat. Students may return to school 24-48 hours after the first dose of antibiotic therapy has been started, in accordance with your doctor's orders. The student must feel well enough to attend, and must not present with any other signs or symptoms, such as elevated temperature. (The strep virus can cause scarlet fever/scarlatina, if left untreated).

Keep your child home if he or she exhibits a skin rash of undetermined origin. Please consult your physician before sending the student to school. A doctor's note stating the condition is not contagious may be necessary for the student to return to school

Emergency Care

Emergency Care
A comprehensive health service is provided in accordance with state law and Board of Education policy. In case of an accident or illness in school, parents/guardians are notified of the health emergency so that the child may be taken home or to a physician. The school cannot provide transportation. In extreme emergencies, the local First Aid Squad (911) will be called.

Health Screenings

Health Screenings
During the school year each student will be seen by the school nurse for the following appraisals: height and weight, body mass index (BMI), hearing, and blood pressure screening.  Vision screening is conducted in grades 2 and 4.  In the event a health problem is identified, notices will be sent to the parent by the nurse.

Physical Exams

Physical Exams
Physical exams are required for all new entrants. A special form for completion by a private physician is provided at the time of registration.

Emergency Cards

Emergency Cards
The Roselle Public School Emergency Card is a legal consent and information form for an emergency situation. Please return the card promptly. Sometimes jobs and friends change. If so, kindly send us a note with the new contact information so we can update your child's records.

Medication Policy

Medication Policy
The certified school nurse and the student's parents/guardians are the only ones permitted to administer medication in New Jersey Schools. Medication will be administered to a student in accordance with Board of Education Policy.
