Can a parent use the Chromebook?

The Chromebooks will only recognize the user ID for Roselle Public Schools Students. The Chromebook was issued to the students to access instruction and activities in Google Classroom and other apps. Parents are urged to allow students to use the Chromebook for that purpose.

Can the Chromebooks be used with another username?

No. Students and staff cannot access a district-owned Chromebook with any other login other than their district-assigned email. For example, students will not be able log in to their personal Gmail account on a district-provided Chromebook. However, if a student logs into another device with their school username (a PC laptop, a school lab computer, a loaner Chromebook, etc.) all of their information (bookmarks, emails, documents, desktop, applications, etc.) will be available to them on that device when using the Chrome browser.

What about safeguarding from unsafe websites while using the Chromebook?

Teaching appropriate use is more important than filtering.

The most important step you can take is establishing expectations around appropriate use on the web and help your child develop an internal filter.

We do our best to ensure the online experience is safe. Before each Chromebook device connects to the Internet, it must pass through district network firewalls and filters. This happens whether the device is browsing on campus or school-owned networks.  What about home? The Chromebook will also have a safe browsing feature built into the image that cannot be adjusted safeguarding your student from inappropriate materials at home. If your child is using the Chromebook at school, at home or at a public library, it will always pass through this filtering and network firewall system before they can see or access web content. Our web filters are programmed to block inappropriate content. As with any device connected to the internet, it is impossible to keep all inappropriate material from being accessed if actively pursued by the user. Students who are found to be actively pursuing inappropriate material will be referred to the building administrators.

How do I make sure my child is using Chromebook safely?

  • Talk with your child about what they are doing online and have them show you what they do and where they go online.
  • Ask them to show you how they use the computer for schoolwork and for fun.
  • Talk about social boundaries and sharing too much information online.
  • Set expectations for appropriate use and the types of websites and social networks that are appropriate for use at home.

Can students download apps?

No. Student access to the web store is limited. Students will only be able to use the approved apps within their Google accounts.

What if I do not have internet at home?

There are several cable companies who are offering free to low cost internet services to families during the pandemic. Examples of these service providers are Xfinity, Comcast, Verizon etc. Parents are encouraged to research and contact these companies for internet services. How do I know my child is completing the work assigned on Google Classroom?

  • Communicate with the teacher when you are concerned if your child is accurately reporting what they need to use the computer for at home or about anything related to classroom activities.
  • Keep a line of communication open where you can share questions or concerns.
  • Track your student’s progress through the parent portal.
  • Consider the “paper equivalent” in difficult computing situations
  • Consider how would you handle the off-task or inappropriate activity if it happened with pencil and paper instead of on a computer?
  • What were your expectations around technology and computing, and do they mirror those expectations for respect and proper behavior at home?

Can you Print from the devices?

Digital online file sharing between staff and students is one of the great advantages of the Chromebooks and is an easy and efficient way to distribute and turn in assignments without printing. It also saves on paper, ink and toner use, thereby saving the district and parents money.

What happens if the device is damaged or lost?

If your device is damaged, you are encouraged to contact the Roselle Public Schools Technology Department immediately for further instructions. helpdesk@roselleschools.org
